Study: Femoral nerve blockade leads to poor isokinetic quadriceps strength after ACL reconstruction | Orthopedics

Study: Femoral nerve blockade leads to poor isokinetic quadriceps strength after ACL reconstruction | Orthopedics

Now this is interesting, because I prefer to perform all acl reconstructions under single shot femoral nerve block.  In my experience it really helps with post operative pain.  However I do notice significant atrophy with the quad in some patients, and difficulty regaining function and girth, sometimes persistently.  This should probably be looked at prospectively.

Athletes with concussions risk lower extremity injuries at return-to-sport | Orthopedics

Athletes with concussions risk lower extremity injuries at return-to-sport | Orthopedics

This is a very good paper and underlines the serious nature of concussions.   Returning to play after concussion greatly increases the risk for lower extremity injury.  This makes total sense, if the control device is not operating properly, then how can it protect itself.

Study finds single- and double-bundle techniques equally effective for ACL reconstruction surgery | Orthopedics

Study finds single- and double-bundle techniques equally effective for ACL reconstruction surgery | Orthopedics

In our cohort of retrospectively reviewed patients in Dubai, we have noted similar findings, a non significant difference in favor of single bundle technique.  We did find as Timo Jarvela's group from Finland, that the revision rate with the double bundle technique was less.  Great study, would like to see more papers in this regard.

ScienceDirect.com - Biophysical Journal - High-Bandwidth AFM-Based Rheology Reveals that Cartilage is Most Sensitive to High Loading Rates at Early Stages of Impairment

ScienceDirect.com - Biophysical Journal - High-Bandwidth AFM-Based Rheology Reveals that Cartilage is Most Sensitive to High Loading Rates at Early Stages of Impairment

Study shows that if you have lost some of the important proteins in the structure of cartilage after injury the cartilage is at its most vulnerable, exercises like running are not recommended.

However I know that you runners do not want to stop, and in many instances will not stop, but if you use your head, and transition to a different exercise maybe you can avoid more rapid degeneration of the cartilage and delay things like osteoarthritis from occuring.

Study finds meniscus allograft allows return-to-sport for competitive athletes | Orthopedics

This is contrary to reports made by our European Colleagues in Amsterdam and Ghent.

Maybe this has more to do with Dr. Stones cartilage work, than the impact of the meniscus.
